Red Curry

Me and Red Curry

I'm pleased to introduce you to the newest member of our family: Red Curry! :)

Sexy, Sporty and Safe!

On June 2nd I picked up my new car, a red Mazda 3 hatchback, that Dad purchased for me to drive.

Isn't it the cutest, sexiest, sportiest little car? :)

It was just last year at the end of September, that I decided to try driving Mom's car

Life is changing so quickly I can't keep up. It's overwhelming. It's exhilarating. It's stressful. It's fantastic.

This post is so much less about a car than it is about where I find myself this June--the month I will mark 18 years since I first experienced debilitating symptoms of chronic illness.

This post is about the symbolic nature of being in a place in which I need a car and feel well enough to do my own driving on a regular basis.

It's about how I leave the house almost every day, sometimes more than once a day.

It's about how I now have the freedom to go where I what to go and Mom has the freedom to go where she wants to go without and conflict over sharing a car.

Before last year, I had not driven since 2001. In 2002, I had given up my first and only car, a sky blue 1989 Ford Tempo that my dad purchased for me at a farm auction when I was 16.

This time, when Dad realized that I needed a new car, we did a TON of research, lots of test-driving and lots of discussing. We wanted a new car with great safety features. I finally narrowed the decision down to either a Honda Civic or a Mazda 3. As you can see, the Mazda 3 won and I am over the moon happy with my decision.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE driving this car. I LOVE how fun it is to drive. I LOVE the red. I LOVE the freedom. I LOVE being able to drive and listen to music and sing along again. I LOVE everything that this car stands for in my new life.

Happy!

How in the heck do you thank someone for buying you a CAR? I really don't know how I will ever thank my dad. When I tried to, he said it was some of the best money he had ever spent. He told me how we had all waited for this day and dreamed that I would reach a point in my life again where I would be well enough to drive and experience life in so many new ways. He complimented me on my persistence on the road to recovery.

I told him the best money he had ever spent was on medical care, specifically that which I receive at Hopkins and at PT.

I feel a little self-conscious about having a new car, a little intimidated by something so shiny and new, and a lot spoiled.

However, as I've told people about my dad's choice to buy me a new car and shared how excited I am to be driving and to have so much freedom, I have felt no judgment--only joy, happiness, and excitement for my new life and new freedom.

Go Warriors! Go Red Curry!

The evening after I picked up the car, Mom and I headed to a nearby sports bar to watch the Warriors play Cleveland in the first game of the playoffs. This was another 'first' for me--chilling at a sports bar watching a game and drinking a beer!

The Warriors won!

Watching the Warriors in the Finals

I know the best gift I can give my dad in return is to enjoy my car to the fullest, to continue to heal as much as possible, and to continue to take joy in my new life. Because after all, that's what our family has dreamed about for 18 years--a healthy, happy Emily.

Blessings,

Emily

Monday Dog Blog: Always Make Time for Play

We're here with a little PSA. Mommy needs to hear this and so do you: always make time for play. No matter how busy you are.
It matters.

What have you done that's fun lately?

Our favorite activity is definitely wrestling!

Happy Monday!

Blessings,

Tovah Rose and Gershwin

Monday Dog Blog: Happy Birthday Tovah Rose Twinkle Toes!

Tovah Rose and Her Guardian Angel, Asher

How did this sweet little girl get to be FOUR years old?!

What a journey we have all been on since she arrived.

At the time, I was too sick to even travel with Mom to get Tovah Rose over July 4th weekend of 2012. Now, I'm taking this little girl for short walks on an almost daily basis.

Hurry Up With Those New Biscuits!

Tovah Rose turned four on May 5th.

New Biscuits!

Tovah Rose enjoyed a birthday almost all to herself. She LOVES being an 'only child' whenever possible. At the end of the day though, she and G did share in the unveiling of the new biscuits!

A Great Day!

First, Tovah went along with me to my counseling session, which is always good because she gets showered with a lot of attention and she can, if necessary, unload any of her Lowchen laments to Evelyn.

After counseling, Tovah Rose and I drove over to PetCo and had some fun girl time together shopping. We picked out all kinds of goodies--lots and lots of treats and one toy. We made sure to get the treats in the pink boxes and bags.

It was so much fun to drive to PetCo with Tovah Rose by myself, without needing the Rolls or Mom! We shopped for over 30 minutes and literally shopped until Mommy almost dropped. :)

Birthday Hugs from Kierny

In the evening Gershwin stayed with Mom, while Tovah Rose went with me to visit Kierny for dinner.

Basically, she had an entire day devoted just to her. As it should be, right?

Tovah Rose and Gershwin in 2012

The following day, May 6th, marked the anniversary of Asher's Gotcha Day. He lives in all of our hearts every day, but especially on these milestones. He would be amazed at how far his Mommy has come since the dark days when he arrived to be a light for my soul in 2002.

Happy Birthday to my Baby Girl! You're all grown up. You're full of piss and vinegar. You challenge me. You make me laugh. You keep great tabs on the happenings in the yard. You give your brother a run for his money. You are bright, alert, happy, joyful, and a true princess. You're the best little fur ball to have sleep on top of my head!

We love you.

We would also like to wish a very happy birthday to our fellow fur babies with the same birthday: Mac and Islay! :)

Happy Monday!

Blessings,

Emily

Monday Dog Blog: Sandwich

Puppy Sandwich

For the past couple of weeks, Mom has been feeling quite under the weather with whatever Spring 'crud' has been going around.

This means lots of snuggle time with the puppies.

The other day, Tovah was resting comfortably next to Mom, when Gershwin decided he wanted to jump up on the sofa too.

Since he will ONLY sit on the left side of someone, he pushed the pillow over and settled himself on top of it.

We were quite surprised to see that Tovah Rose put up with this antic of his and they stayed in this goofy sandwich for a little while.

Gershwin always loves to have a baby when he naps.

Hurry Up Mommy!

And he is NOT going to let me forget to give him his goat kefir before my nap!

Happy Monday!

Blessings,

Emily

Monday Dog Blog: Counseling

Gershwin Needed to Talk to Evelyn

Now that we are back from the beach, it's back to reality. Appointments. And more appointments.

I'm so grateful that Evelyn allows me to bring one of the puppies with me each week to counseling. This past week, Mr. G accompanied me. During the session, he got off of the sofa next to me and hopped in the chair with Evelyn.

I guess maybe he needed to talk a little about some things too.

Being able to bring one of the puppies with me is such a helpful coping tool!

Happy Monday!

Blessings,

Emily

Monday Dog Blog: Good Morning Mommy!

Sunday Morning Snuggles

Well, we are beginning to settle back into life at home. It has felt a bit overwhelming and hectic, and I still have quite a bit of unpacking to do.

One of my favorite parts of the day is waking up to snuggles from the puppies. Mom usually sends them into my room when I am waking up. On Sunday morning, it was all I could do to make myself get out of bed and get moving. I mean, how am I supposed to move with these two by my side?

Who would want to give up this kind of snuggling?!

Happy Monday!

Blessings,

Emily

Monday Dog Blog: Goodbye (for now) Sunset Beach, NC!

Our Happy Place

Well, our little family is back home after wrapping up our time in Sunset Beach, NC last week.

We lucked out with a couple more fabulous beach days.

Getting Our Toes Wet!

Our dainty little Twinkle Toes is not a big fan of the wind or water, but on our last big beach day it was very warm, and she decided she felt brave enough to get her toes wet!

A Perfect Day!

We were all very proud of her!

In fact, we ALL enjoyed getting our toes wet. I went into the ocean up to my shorts!

Just Chilling

We went to the beach one last time just for a short bit another day, but it was quite windy. Twinkle Toes has figured out the best ways to avoid the wind (underneath the Rolls, on my lap wrapped in a jacket, on the side of the chair away from the wind).

G just wanted to be near Mom, who used the Rolls as a comfy chair to watch the waves roll in and out.

Walking with Mommy

Our beach time this year was truly fantabulous!

Now, it's back to reality...

Happy Monday!

Blessings,

Emily
